About the book
This published dramatic poem revisits the legend of Tristan and Isolde, drawing on Sir Thomas Malory. Beyond the love story, it explores a transcendent understanding of destiny and Tristan’s transformation into the Black Knight.
Intrigue, emotional conflict and mystical motifs shape its chivalric world. A distinctive metaphysical interpretation places the characters’ choices and the question of predestination at the centre of the familiar legend.
READ AN EXCERPT · ABOUT 1 MINUTE
First Song · The Birth of Tristan
Long ago, in days gone by,
there lived a glorious king, Arthur, who then
ruled England, Scotland, Wales
and many other kingdoms;
their lesser kings all owed him fealty.
Among them was Melodias, lord of Liones,
the handsomest knight, his country’s champion.
With him I begin my tale,
for only then will you understand my song.In those days, Melodias
loved the younger sister of King Mark,
the lord of Cornwall,
and took the beautiful Elizabeth as his wife.Time passed,
and gentle, beautiful Elizabeth was with child;
yet above the royal couple’s happiness
dark clouds began to gather.
